Appreciating Christmas

Appreciating Christmas

What an extraordinary Christmas lies ahead this year! It's that magical time when the spirit of giving envelops us, reminding us of the presence of God. When my son recently asked me what I most anticipate this Christmas, my immediate response was, "Just being here with you and our family." Embracing the essence of life's smaller moments has become crucial, particularly treasuring time with loved ones. Having missed holidays due to military deployment, I've learned not to take anything for granted.

Amidst this appreciation, Christmas envelops us in its wonder and charm. Classic tales like "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens resonate deeply with the theme of gratitude. I'll momentarily set aside the grandest Christmas story to share my gratitude.

The festive season fills me with a profound sense of love and thankfulness. If only I could shower everyone with gifts! In our family, we prioritize needed items over desires during our gift-giving tradition. However, beyond the joyous exchanges, Christmas also unveils emotional complexities tied to past hurts and fractured relationships, offering opportunities for healing. For some, the season brings loneliness, making it vital to check in on friends and family, ensuring everyone feels the warmth of Christmas.

True Christmas celebration revolves around appreciating the birth of our Savior. It's not solely His birth we honor; it's His life, death, and the hope of eternal life. This profound gift, the birth of hope in Bethlehem, signifies our salvation.

While fictional characters like Santa Claus entertain us, their commercialization often overshadows Christmas' true meaning. Let's cherish the holiday by recalling the Christ child's birth, prompting generosity towards the less fortunate, as Scrooge eventually did.

William James once noted, "the deepest craving in human nature is to be appreciated." It's plausible this applies to Christ as well, born in human form. Reflecting God's image, appreciating Him seems a fitting sentiment this season. As we gaze up, may our gratitude shine, expressed through our giving. May this holiday season find you embracing and expressing your appreciation too.
